Gas detection has various applications. In printing facilities, solvents that evaporate quickly are often used. These volatile substances can be harmful if inhaled. It is also important to apply gas detection in parking garages. In parking garages, vehicle exhaust gases can accumulate under certain conditions, think of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Where do you place gas detection equipment?
Gas detection equipment should be strategically placed so that Hazardous Substances (HZS) and Non-Hazardous Substances (NHZS) are detected effectively and in a timely manner. Where you place the gas detector depends on the type of gas. Lighter gases like hydrogen rise, so detectors for these gases should be placed high (at head height). Heavier gases like propane sink, so detectors should also be placed low (at knee height). Additionally, it's important to place stationary gas detectors near potential leak points, such as through flanges, fitted critical piping, valves, and equipment. In spaces like parking garages, detectors should be placed in strategic locations to guarantee effective airflow and detection distribution.
Integration with alarm systems
Aside from correct placement, it's also important that gas detectors are linked to alarm systems. The alarm system can then issue warnings when a dangerous concentration of gas is detected. Alarm systems can also automatically activate ventilation systems or other emergency measures.
Maintenance, testing, and calibration
A good installation is just the first step. The maintenance and annual testing and calibration of gas detectors is equally important. This ensures the equipment remains reliable and provides accurate measurements. Negligence in this can cause malfunctions and incorrect measurements with significant hazards as a result. Make sure that after installation, you have a maintenance plan that is also executed, and that employees know how the equipment works. Or engage an expert to take care of this for you.
