A cover net secures loose light cargo, such as green waste, rubble, stones, or firewood, in a trailer or open flatbed.Cover nets, also known as trailer nets, may only be used for cargo that cannot be secured in any other way. The net is completely stretched over the side wall.

The law on cover nets in the Netherlands

Since 2010, strict rules apply to the transport of loose items in a trailer or flatbed. This obligation is set out in vehicle regulation 5.18.6,  which state that:

• The vehicle must be loaded in a way that the cargo or parts of it cannot fall off the vehicle.
• Loose cargo or parts of it at risk of falling while the vehicle is moving must be properly covered.

If the police stop you and you don't have a cover net on your trailer, you can be fined.

Tips for using cargo nets

• the size of the mesh must always be smaller than the smallest part of the cargo
• check the nets for damage during use, and repair them if necessary
• always check that the nets are properly secured
